What are Funeral Payments?

The Funeral Payment is a grant that can be paid if you are responsible for organising the funeral of your partner or close friend or relative.

It can cover a number of costs related to the funeral, including:

  • funeral bills and cremation costs
  • necessary travel costs
  • other funeral expenses such as a coffin or flowers – up to a designated amount of money

Who can claim?

You can claim for a Funeral Payment if you are receiving Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit. You must also be the best person to carry out the funeral arrangements.

Your savings do not affect your bid for Funeral Payments, but money tied up in the estate of the dead person will be taken into account.
