Derbyshire is the 21st largest county in England by area and the 21st largest by population. Along with Leicestershire it can lay claim to being the most central part of England. Large parts of the county overlap the Pennines and it also contains a substantial part of the Peak District National Park. The main city in this largely rural county is Derby, with other significant towns including Chesterfield, Buxton and Matlock. The county also borders Greater Manchester to the north west, Yorkshire to the north, Nottinghamshire to the east and Cheshire/Staffordshire to the west.
Up until relatively recently the main industries of Derbyshire were farming and mining (including the mining of Blue John, a very rare blue stone highly prized by jewellers), which has left its' mark on the surrounding countryside.
As of the 2001 census there were 88949 people aged over 70 living in Derbyshire, approximately 12.1% of the total population.
