Nottinghamshire is the 27th largest county in England, yet is one of the larger counties in the East Midlands in terms of population, with more than 1 million people, making it the 17th largest county in the country. The county borders Yorkshire to the north, Lincolnshire to the east, Leicestershire to the south and Derbyshire to the west. The county city is Nottingham, with other major towns in the region including Mansfield and Newark-on-Trent. The majority of people in Nottinghamshire live in the Greater Nottingham conurbation, which also extends into Derbyshire.

As of the 2001 census there were 88,314 people aged over 70 living in Nottinghamshire, approximately 11.7% of the total population.
