Solihull has a rich history, having been referred to in the Doomsday Book as a market area where people from outlying towns would come to trade. As a crossroads for the area, Solihull soon attracted settlers and began to grow as a commercial centre. But it wasn’t until industrialisation that Solihull grew at a rapid rate, swallowed up by nearby Birmingham. Its population tripled in the inter-war period, and now the metropolitan borough has a population of some 200,000 people.
