Southwark is south of central London, bordering the river to the north, Lewisham to the east, Bromley to the south and Lambeth to the west. The first deep-level London 'tube' underground line was the City and South London Railway, now part of the Bank branch of the Northern line, which opened in 1890, running from King William Street in the City south through Borough to Stockwell.
