Walsall in its current form was established in 1974, when the former county borough of Walsall was combined with the Aldridge-Brownhills urban district of Staffordshire. This created the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall. When the West Midlands County Council was abolished in 1986, Walsall borough became a unitary authority.
